Post Race BBQ And A Return To Running

Last night I was at the post race barbeque held by Allybea and Hubby, WHW Runner. They pulled out all the stops (apparently WHW Runner even did the hoovering yesterday morning) and the food was great. I ate plenty (it’s got to last me 5 weeks until Mrs pacepusher returns from Malawi), drank plenty, including some of WHW Runners finest malts, and chatted plenty. If we hadn’t all been involved in the WHW race though it would have been a pretty quiet night! Thank you both for your hospitality.

There were a couple of injured souls there last night, Sonic (wearing a Sonic T-shirt – brilliant!) with his infected shin, and John M limping with a stress fracture in his foot. Both completed the race with these injuries which is a great achievement and I wish them both a speedy recovery.

As for me, a little hungover, I returned to the world of running today. I always stress about my first run after a big race. I’m always worried that my legs won’t remember what to do, that the niggles won’t have gone away and that I won’t enjoy it. So with a certain amount of fear and trepidation, I eventually headed out of the door.

15:00 3 miles 22:16

No splits  Average 7:25 min/miles

I felt great… for the first 50 meters! I hadn’t forgotten how to run, thankfully, and I did enjoy the run to a certain degree, however all the niggles I was worried about began to show their ugly faces one after the other. Firstly it was just tight hamstrings, but this was followed by a tightness in my groin on the right side, and then a slight feeling of shinsplints. Slightly sore ankles, feet, toes, back to the groin… you get the idea!

The groin was the worst but I don’t think it’s anything to worry about, I’m sure it’s just one of those niggles that will go away with time. It was never painful,  just a little uncomfortable a couple of times. Anyway, despite feeling like a Yorkshire Terrier in a Greyhound race, I averaged 7:25 min/miles, which is probably too fast for my first run back, but would you expect anything less of me?

My plan was to go to the club tomorrow night and do a full session – although not at full speed. After today’s run however, I think I’ll either just have a run on my own, or join the slower group for their session. I still want to go to the club though because JK’s going and I can’t let him take all the WHWR glory!

So tonight, with nobody to stop me, I’ll be watching the European Cup Final. Thomas, I’m sorry, but I cannot bring myself to support the Germans. It’s nothing personal, it’s just that I’m English and have a grudge to bare – something to do with penalty shoot-outs!

At the barbeque last night there were a couple of predictions made. We can safely say that Spain will not win 2-0 because that was JK’s prediction. Mystic Debs went for 2-1 to the Germans… a good prediction I think, and please note, Debs knows nothing about football! She didn’t even know who Germany were playing! I’m going to go for a 1-1 draw, and a win for the Germans on penalties (he says with a hint of irony). That said, COME ON SPAIN!!!!

Now, where did I leave my beer?

  1. At least I got half my prediction right. Not bad for a novice 😉

Sonic did laugh when I asked him (after half time!) if Spain were playing in red 😉

Thus confirming: Girls + football = danger.

Sounds like you had a lovely run. You’ve even put my comback on hold for another couple of days.

Now, go and do the dishes!!

  2. Hi Neal, go ahead and support Spain. No offense taken. I guess they will win 1:0. 😉
