Same Same, But Different!

15:15ish 5 miles not timed

Another run with nothing much to report. Again no watch or GPS and hence, no splits/times to report. I was wearing my new Saucony Grid Rides today. It’s always nice to wear new shoes but these didn’t feel great. They’re not my recommended model of shoe, but at about £35.00 in the States, I reckoned they’d do for shorter runs. Maybe it was my legs that felt heavy though and it’s perhaps not fair to blame the shoes… they did feel better over the last couple of miles as I got closer to home and picked the pace up.

I was forced to laugh when catching up on the many running blogs I read. WHW Runner has posted a very serious, well written piece regarding the media coverage of the recent OMM race in the lakes which was abandoned due to severe weather conditions. Have a read, then compare it to my last post regarding a stuffed toy and drinking beer. In the words of Chandler from ‘Friends’, “could they be any more different?”

That’s the beauty of these blogs, we all write what we want, serious or silly. We mention running occasionally, but then we run a lot, so how boring would our blogs be if that was all we talked about? If you never have, explore my Blogroll and see for yourself just how different all our blogs are, and thus all our personalities are. Ultimately though, remember that we all share a common love – running… especially on the West Highland Way!

Finally, I’d like to draw your attention to the top of the Coca-Cola Football League Two table…

Bradford Army!

I’m Back!

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , on August 12, 2008 by pacepusher

At the running club last night, Chris asked what had happened to my blog. He said he’d had to resort to watching TV rather than reading it. So come on, turn off that nasty Eastenders and get reading… pacepusher is back!!!

For reasons which will not surface on a blog, I found myself in Yorkshire again last week. I’d planned to run  each day and enjoy the chance of some new scenery, but best laid plans and all that…

Wednesday 12th August

10:36 6.5 miles 49:28

1 6:59 2 7:11 3 7:18 4 7:34 5 8:01 6 8:29 .5 3:57 (7:56 pace)  Average 7:37 pace

I felt good when I set off, clocking sub 7:00 for a first uphill mile. As time went on though, I started to feel terrible. By about 3 miles I wanted to stop and walk. I felt sick, dizzy and exhausted. In true stupid pacepusher fashion though, I didn’t. I kept running, although as you’ll see from the splits, only just! Finishing in a WHW shuffle stylee! When I finally got back to the house, I never wanted to run for as long as I lived and decided that that would be it until the weekend when I would attempt my long run ( I’d planned 18 miles).

Valley Parade, Home Of Bradford City FC

The weekend came, but Saturday was spent golfing and going to watch the mighty Bradford City open their season with a 2-1 home win against Notts County. Two of my nephews came along too and I sat with wee Tommy during the game. We had 4 season tickets (Mum, Dad and the two boys), but there were 6 of us as my Gran also came along, and we’d been unable to get seats together. It was a great game, a massive 14,000 strong crowd (huge for a 2nd division game) were in great voice and after looking very comfortable at 2-0, we conceded with about 15 minutes to go and in true City style were left with a nerve racking end to the game. We held out for the win though thankfully. All the boys wore new Bradford City shirts for the occasion!

Jack, Me and Tommy… Bradford Army!

Along came Sunday. I didn’t feel great and the thought of running wasn’t very appealing so I headed for the golf course again with Dad instead before returning to Glasgow in the afternoon. Monday night is of course running club night and the usual speed session. I was a bit worried about it and had no idea how I would run, but my legs felt better for the rest. So the session…

Monday 11th August

19:12 10.02 miles 1:28:48

10 x 30 secs (30 secs recovery) (pace between 5:00-5:35)
20 x 1 min (1 min recovery) (pace between 5:19-5:56)
10 x 30 secs (30 secs recovery) (pace between 4:56-5:49)

This was a very tough session. The short bursts meant running quickly and never really catching your breath. Call me sadistic but I really enjoyed it, and it was a nice change from the long reps we have been doing recently. I pushed really hard throughout, and a couple of the guys made comments regarding how I’d kept working hard throughout.

I was absolutely shattered at the end of the session. More so than after any training session I have done. Over the last five 30 second reps, I would stop running, wobble a bit, almost throw up, then set off hard and fast on the next interval. I don’t know where I was finding the strength and my final rep at 4:56 pace was my fastest interval, even if it didn’t feel it at the time!

So I’m back, and promise to keep you all updated again from now on! Especially regarding my possible entry into the Perth 24 hour race!!!

Hands up if you thought pacepusher hadn’t blogged because he hadn’t been running. Well you’re half right!

Thanks to WHW Runner for his comment/advice after my last post. Before I’d seen it however, I had decided to take a couple of days off and see how my body felt by Sunday.

So Friday night saw me out for a few beverages with Crazyboy and Boyracer. I would like to say quiet drinks but that would be a lie! Then Saturday, after a leisurely lunch with the Crazyboy family, Myself and Boyracer headed off to watch the football (I use the term loosely) at Fir Park. This was perhaps the only occasion where you would see two sets of supporters decked out in claret and amber colours. We were watching Motherwell take on the mighty Bradford City! The first half was awful if you were in the Bradford end. Motherwell scored in the first minute and were 4-0 up by half-time. This didn’t stop the approximate 200 City fans being on top form though and the singing didn’t stop. I was amazed at the size of the away support and the songs at times were very funny. Unimpressed by the size and quality of Fir Park (City were in the English Premiership not that long ago and have a stadium to prove it) many of the songs were based on this. “My garden shed, is bigger than this”, followed closely by, “my spiders matchbox, is bigger than this”. Then the perhaps more realistic, “we’ve got one stand, bigger than this”. It was all good humoured, and after a chorus of “one claret and a amber, there’s only one claret and amber”, the favourite chant was, “we’re gonna win 5-4!”

The second-half was better. We had a goal disallowed and hit the bar, but it finished 4-0. To be fair Motherwell looked good, so the ‘old and infirm teams’ had better be on the look out when the season starts!

My plan was to run 16 miles this weekend, but I had already decided to just aim for 14 to reduce the pressure a wee bit. I was to get an early night and set out reasonably early so that I didn’t have time to think about it too much. Sadly, the eldest son downstairs had a party. Much singing early on turned to fighting and a smashed window. His parents arrived home at about 1:30am and things eventually calmed down. It had been very hostile and even phoning the police seemed like a bad idea, so I sat up watching a film with the volume high and sank a few beers. At 2:30am I went to bed! To be fair to his parents, I over heard the telling off he got and I won’t repeat the language that his furious mother was using, and they came to each flat to apologise. Hopefully this will be the last of it.

Anyway I was in no fit state to run early Sunday morning, so it was very hot when I finally headed out the door…

14:51 14 miles 1:49:43

1 7:39 2 7:56 3 7:55 4 7:49 5 7:51 6 7:51 7 8:01 8 7:45 9 7:48 10 7:50 11 7:50 12 7:49 13 7:52 14 7:49  Average 7:50 min/miles

My only aim was to run the distance. The time on these runs isn’t that important, it’s more time on feet that counts. However, I quietly hoped to be sub 8:00 min/mile pace for the run. Anyway, after last week, finishing was the primary objective. I decided to wear my hydration belt. The benefits of this were two fold. Firstly, I would have plenty of liquid, and secondly, it would slow me down a bit. I didn’t feel great when I set off, and it was only after about 4 miles that I began to relax and ease into the run. I wasn’t going to wear my GPS. I was running on the cycle track and pretty much know where the mile markers are and certainly didn’t need the pressure, but I decided it would help me keep slow. And it did! I’m really happy with my average pace and the consistency of the splits, especially given the heat, but the last couple of miles were really tough. I hadn’t had the greatest pre-run preparations courtesy of downstairs, and after a quick stretch I took a nap on the sofa whilst watching the golf.

I was at the Bookseller household for a well deserved take-out that evening, where again I had to cope with Boyracer’s company for the third time in three days! It was a nice night and it was nice to see everybody, including (dare I say) Mrs Boyracer (? – they’re not married!). She currently works a 25 (sic) hour day having recently qualified as an accountant. Don’t worry she’s not boring!

And so to tonight…

19:13 8.84 miles 1:16:53

5mins – 6:25 pace (2mins recovery) 5mins – 6:12 pace (2 mins) 4mins – 6:12 pace (2mins) 4mins – 6:17 pace (2mins) 3mins – 6:27 pace (90secs) 3mins – 6:18 pace (90 secs) 2mins – 5:54 pace (1min) 2mins – 6:00 pace (1min) 1min – 5:42 pace (1min) 1min – 5:25 pace

Buoyed by my success yesterday, I was looking forward to tonight’s session. It was a tough one though. It was hot, and thirst was a problem. I was surprised at how fresh my legs felt after yesterday and I managed to push myself pretty hard. Looking at my pace for the intervals I’m really quite pleased. A couple of the younger girls have stepped up to the group and it gives another marker for us all. As a group we seem to be getting faster and covering more distance with each session. Competition is always a good thing in this type of session as it really forces you to push hard. I wouldn’t work anywhere near as hard alone.

The highlight of the night was the kit chosen by Gordon and Davie. Gordon was wearing a green vest with orange shorts, whilst Davie was wearing an orange vest with black/green shorts. As they ran together just ahead of me, I asked if they had got their kit mixed up in the wash!

Tonight my legs feel terrible. Not like last week, they feel terrible because I have trained hard, and I feel so much better for it. Let’s just hope I have no more relapses.

Mrs pacepusher is home on Thursday from her Malawi adventure. The 5 weeks have flown by and I’m really looking forward to having her home… I’m starving!

Eureka! I have solved the law of marathon training! It can be explained through the following simple equation, LR=bw2. That’s if LR = Long Run, and bw = bad weather. Einstein eat your heart out, E=mc2… rubbish!

I didn’t run yesterday. I was going to do a steady 4 miles, so that, if the weekend went to plan, I would achieve 60 miles for the week. There has been talk on a few blogs recently regarding setting targets, such as weekly mileage etc. and running for the sake of attaining these targets. I have fallen into this trap over previous weeks, but not now. What would have been the benefit of four slow miles? That’s just making unnecessary washing, and believe me, we have more than enough washing in the pacepusher household… we keep Persil in business!

So yes, another weekend, another long run, and another atrocious days weather! Wind, Rain and even a little sleet… thank goodness for my new Gore-Tex jacket! Michael (The Headless Chicken) joined me for my run today and made it look a lot easier than I did. I didn’t have a great run. By half way I was feeling great, and the splits were pretty much what I was aiming for. However, the second half of the run was uphill and into a headwind, thus the split times suffered (just see miles 13 and 14!), and I was slower overall than two weeks ago. Mile 17, 8:23 minutes, didn’t involve me losing a limb and hopping. Yes I was tired and sore, but traffic actually held us up for a good while!

I think my legs are still feeling the effects of last weekends antics, along with a couple of relatively hard sessions during the week. I’m glad ‘The Chicken’ joined me today as I don’t think I would have made it out of the front door if I’d been running alone. The weather was that bad.

The Headless Chicken had a lesson in the art of the French language during the run today, after I was forced to have a discussion with a taxi driver regarding his driving ability. Speeding up towards two people running across the road, and then sounding your horn aggressively whilst finding the time to wind down your window and engage in conversation, is a fine art… but a flippin’ stupid one! You guessed it, today’s ‘How Annoying?’ award goes to said taxi driver. Please attend 123a St Vincent Street, Glasgow City Centre, at 08:00am tomorrow morning. I won’t be there, neither will your certificate, but you’ll be mighty annoyed at losing a fare… unlucky!

Half a mile into the run, we were passed by Comedy Dave’s vehicle from their Radio 1 Sport Relief Challenge. Their aim is to run a mile at each Scottish and English Premiership football ground. So as we headed off for 20 miles, Chappers and Dave were heading towards Love Street (St Mirren’s ground) to run 1 mile. Yesterday, while they were live on the Radio just before running a mile at Kilmarnock. Chappers was receiving a sports massage in preparation. Does anybody else think this excessive? It’s only 1 mile, 4 times a day, with significant rest. I ran 20 miserable, painful miles. Did I get a massage? or chauffeur driven to my next destination? No. I drove The Headless Chicken home, then went to my Brother and Sister in-laws to help tile their bathroom. Welcome to the real world eh?

Finally, well done to Barnsley FC who have just beaten Chelsea 1-0 in the FA cup! Being a Bradford City fan, I’ll support any team from Yorkshire. Oh, except Leeds United… and maybe Huddersfield Town!
