Beer Is NOT A Sports Drink

I met Crazyboy and Keir (I’ll need to get this guy a blog name if he’s going to be running with us again) tonight for a run. Crazyboy was without transport, so we all met at the Crazy houshold with the prospect of a new route and a change of scenery. Keir is currently doing a PGCE in Secondary PE and has been rather busy, so hasn’t been running with us for a while. He claimed he would struggle round as he was short of fitness, but we knew differently. Keir is an excellent runner over any distance, despite previously focusing on the 400 meters, and he always runs us into the ground! It’s been a while with work, study, and babies since we’ve all run together, and it was good to have 3 out of the 4 old ‘Roadwarriors’ together again.

We were right about Keir (or perhaps I’ll call him Boyracer) pushing the pace despite his supposed lack of fitness. He told us when he arrived that he had already done a ‘wee trot’ earlier today, and as I attacked the first hill (a.k.a The Hill Of Death), just at the end of the first mile, the Boyracer came flying past me. Some things never change!

Crazyboy was struggling with his dodgy leg again tonight, so once we were through the darkness of Pollock Park (safety in numbers and all that), the head torch came off, and as instructed, Boyracer and pacepusher went for it. The final mile split of 6:39 is largely a steady incline. True to form though, Boyracer never let me get a toe in front at any point… it really isn’t worth trying, this is him apparently unfit!

After the run it was into Crazyboy’s house for post run recovery. This consisted of water, chat, tea, gossip, more tea, a little crying from Baby Crazyboy, and fish finger butties! Thanks Mrs Carzyboy!

The photos from the Liverpool Half-Marathon are now available from Marathonfoto at the usual extortionate expense, so here’s a few thumbnails that I assume are free!

Crazyboy left this rather amusing message on my post, ‘It’s Official’,

Note to all runners – beer is NOT a sports drink. I have NEVER felt as rancid as I did hobbling my way round Liverpool so take my advice folks – just say no!

I saw at first hand just how rancid he was and won’t be chancing my luck again… although I did get a PB after consuming a few beverages so… !?!?

On a sad note, I’ve just read that Paula Radcliffe has withdrawn from the London Marathon this year with a toe injury. I love the fact you can be in the same race as these superstars, it wouldn’t happen in any other sport. Last year I beat Haile Gebrselassie in the London Marathon as he pulled out with stomach cramps, does this mean I have now also beaten Paula by default? Am I slowly but surely becoming the greatest distance runner in the world? You can dream eh?
